Dinosaur Cookie Cutters: Momster Versus Godzilla

Dinosaur Cookie Cutters: Momster Versus Godzilla

Does your favorite dino fan love cookies?  Who doesn't?!?  What better combination can there be than dinosaurs and cookies?  And the best part?  These dinosaurs won't destroy your kitchen!  We have some ideas for various ways to drive your herd together and make some wonderful memories.

First, make the cookies.  We prefer this recipe my mom has handed down to us:

Sour Cream Cookies

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda in cream
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 cups flour

Directions:

  1. Mix some cream and baking soda, set aside.
  2. Combine the sugar, shortening, egg, salt, vanilla and baking powder; mix well.
  3. Add flour a cup at a time, then add sour cream.
  4. Chill.
  5. Roll out on a well floured surface.
  6. Cut out cookies and place on ungreased cookie sheet or use parchment paper.
  7. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.

Dough behaves the best when it's chilled overnight.  Also remember to flour your dough surface and cookie cutters for best results.

Of course, use these cutters to make Godzilla and his footprints.

After the cookies have cooled, mix your perfect royal icing and fill icing bags.  Kids can help at any point along the way, and lessons in measuring, mixing and baking are all valuable as well as the time you spend together.  They usually prefer decorating with fun colors, patterns or sprinkles.

Whether you decorate with them or for them, we have some ideas for you.

For a cute dinosaur look, try brighter, fun colors with embellishments:

  • Polka dots: Pipe small dots of different colors onto the dinosaur's body with matching claws on the footprint, creating a fun and playful look.
  • Stripes: Use a small star tip to pipe thin lines of icing in different colors, creating a striped pattern on the dinosaur's body.
  • Hearts: Pipe small hearts onto the dinosaur's body using a small round tip, creating a sweet and whimsical design.
  • Text: Use a small round tip to pipe words or phrases onto the dinosaur's body, such as "roar" or "rawr-some."

Fortunately, Godzilla can also be decorated to resemble a T-Rex:

  • Outline the T-Rex shape with green royal icing using a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
  • Fill in the T-Rex shape with green flood icing, using a toothpick or scribe tool to spread the icing evenly and remove any air bubbles.
  • Allow the icing to dry completely before adding details.
  • Use a small round tip to pipe white royal icing onto the T-Rex's teeth, eyes and claws.
  • Use a small star tip to pipe black royal icing onto the T-Rex's pupils and nostrils.
  • Use a toothpick or scribe tool to shape and refine the details as needed.

Of course, you could go for the realistic look like Korey did with scale details and muddy-looking footprints.

As the momster, you rule the kitchen; beautiful cookies can be made as an after-school snack, for birthday treats, an after-dinner dessert or for a specific celebration.  Little ones or big can be in the kitchen learning about cooking, family or cleaning up their messes.  However you decide, however it looks, you will treasure the memories of the looks on their faces and the conversations you had with the family all together!
