Score Big With Beautifully Decorated Soccer Sugar Cookies

Score Big With Beautifully Decorated Soccer Sugar Cookies

Do you have a soccer player or fan in your family?  Need halftime snacks, after-game boosts or party treats?  We found two methods for making detailed soccer balls and jerseys that will make the whole team cheer!

First, start with making dough, using these cutters to make soccer balls and jerseys:

Bake the cookies according to directions and let cool.  While the cookies are cooling, mix and color your icing.

The first technique is to use an edible marker to draw the hexagons onto your cookie.

Make sure to mark which shapes will be black and which will be white, then outline them with icing.

Fill in the black and white, using a scribe to smooth the icing.

Let those colors dry, then define the borders with thin lines of black icing.  You can also add details such as lines and dots to make the pattern more realistic.

This makes a shiny and puffy, or realistic, design.

For a flatter and more matte design, cover the whole cookie in white icing first, using a scribe to help spread it and wipe away excess.

After this layer dries, use your patterned stencil to fill in the black details.

Yesenia shows you how to decorate the jersey as well as the soccer balls here.

Each method has its pros and cons.  Markers are easy and quick, they don't require lots of equipment or experience, they allow for precise details and patterns, and a wide range of colors and tip sizes available.  However, colors may fade or smudge over time, they are limited to flat surfaces, and they make correcting mistakes more difficult.  On the other hand, stencils allow for more intricate, detailed patterns and correction of mistakes, can be used on curved surfaces and have the distinct advantage of being used with different types of icing.  They do present unique challenges, including requiring some specialized equipment and experience, holds the possibility to be more time-consuming, and is limited to the size and shape of the stencil.

Before you go all in on one way or the other, we encourage you to watch both tutorials and practice the methods shown.  You'll be an expert and receive all the oohs, aahs and yums in no time!
