Simple Tricks To Coloring Royal Icing For Decorating Boho Cookies

Boho styles are very popular these days, and cookies are no exception.  They're a popular choice for weddings and baby showers in particular.   They are typically decorated with intricate designs, warm, earthy colors and jewel tones like Korey's:

Rainbows, with or without fringe, are frequently found in everything boho.

To make your own boho-inspired decorated cookies, start with white icing.  We talk about making royal icing and achieving a base of white here.  Even if you're making darker colors, begin with white as your base to achieve your pure hue.

In order to attain the best results, use gel coloring.  These can vary from a slight paste to more liquid content, so you may want to try out several brands.  Little Cookie Company has a video here where she gives advice on brands.

Little Cookie Company also shows you how to mix these colors

with what she calls the "ivory and black trick."  She starts with three drops of color in the white icing, separates some out and adds ivory, then goes back to the original color to separate some more to add black.  I love the muted colors the ivory brings out and how the black darkens the original color without making it look dirty, so to speak.  She gives tips on correcting the shade if you didn't obtain what you wanted.

Depending on how you plan to decorate your boho cookies, you may need to adjust the consistency of the icing. If you want to pipe intricate designs like Korey's, you'll need a thicker icing. If you want to flood the cookies with icing, you'll need a thinner icing. To adjust the consistency of the icing, add a small amount of water or powdered sugar until you achieve the desired consistency.  Little Cookie Company shows you how here.

If you wish to make fun patterns, write on your cookies or give them texture, you'll need several types and sizes of tips as well as piping bags.

Remember to give yourself plenty of time and space to practice, practice, practice.  Tap into your fun, creative side by mixing colors that will be a feast for the eyes!
