Free Cookie Classes And A Turkey Decorating Lesson

Free Cookie Classes And A Turkey Decorating Lesson

Everyone has their Thanksgiving favorites; some of us look forward to certain dishes for months (mashed potatoes, anyone?), some of us can't wait to see relatives, friends, the parade or the game, and some of us love the quiet reflection on the good measure that's been poured out in our lap (Luke 6:38).  I'm not captive to any certain tradition, as we've done many different things over the years to celebrate.  Once, when far from home, our family of five went to the circus (of course, we had dinner later that day, but the circus was super fun).  Last year, we spent the holiday with our son who is serving in the military. The oven was broken in our rented house, so we cooked the turkey and a batch of brownies on the grill.  The brownies were a tad overdone, but the turkey was delicious!

This year, I'm tempted to try my hand at decorating turkey cookies.  There will be seven of us for dinner (smaller crowd than some years, larger than others), and I think they will be a bit hit!  I'll use our Thanksgiving cutters, of course, and follow Auntie's Cakery's video instructions which I'll write out so you don't have to keep stopping the video.  Remember we have blogs on the best cookie decorating tools,

cookie dough recipes,

 mixing royal icing,

and achieving the color you desire.

To decorate the turkey, first draw an outline on the cookie with a slightly thicker royal icing.

After that has dried a bit, flood the inside with thinner royal icing of the same color.

Use a stylus to smooth out the flood.

While the flood is still wet, use another color of the same consistency to draw details.

Drag your stylus through the colors at an angle.  Make sure to wipe your tool after each swipe.

Repeat the first three steps with the head.

Set Tom aside to dry overnight, then begin working on his wing, again repeating steps 1-3 for this feature, adding the beak and feet while waiting for the wing outline to dry or adding them after it.

Add color and interest to the wing by repeating the steps you did to make the feathers.

Add the rest of his features, and voila!  Everyone will want to eat dessert first!

I would very much love to see your turkeys!

On another note, I received some feedback that our giveaway had a lot of steps.  I so appreciate any and all constructive comments you have, so I made it a little easier.  You can still do all the pinning if you wish, and please have fun!  If your tastes are more simple, follow the link on our home page

That's it!  You can be all done or continue to rack up more entries.

I would love to hear your Thanksgiving stories-the good, the bad, and the disasters.

Happy baking!
